What Do I Need to Know if I Am Pregnant in College?

College is a stressful time. Attending lectures, reading, writing papers, and taking tests are mixed with a college social life. How can you possibly add a pregnancy? Just because your pregnancy was unplanned, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. You have rights and options. Take a closer look.

Title IX Protects Pregnant College Students

All public and private colleges and universities receiving Federal funds must comply with Title IX. Whether you attend Brevard College or the University of North Carolina, schools must follow specific guidelines for assisting pregnant students.

Some of your rights include:

  • Accommodations for your health and safety (such as avoiding hazardous substances)
  • Modify your physical environment (such as accessible seating)
  • Extend deadlines and/or allow you to make up tests or assignments
  • Provide remote learning options
  • Modify academic responsibilities
  • Excuse absences due to pregnancy or childbirth for as long as your doctor says it’s necessary
  • Protect you from harassment

If you are uncertain about your rights as a pregnant student, schedule an appointment with your school’s Title IX Coordinator.

Assistance from The Center for Women

In addition to the assistance your college or university offers, we want to help you, too. We understand the stress motherhood can add to a college student’s life, so we want to help you with material and emotional support.

We offer short, dynamic lessons on prenatal care, childbirth, newborn care, etc. When you complete a lesson, you earn points to trade for items such as maternity and baby clothes, diapers, strollers, bottles, etc.

Our peer advocates are with you every step of the way. We’ll provide referrals for housing, food, child care, temporary cash assistance, and more.

You Have Another Option

Some women feel that although they are pregnant, now is not the time to parent. These women choose to place their children for adoption. Making an adoption plan for your child means you select the adoptive family who will raise them. You set them on a path for a bright future.

Placing your child for adoption costs you nothing. All of your medical and legal expenses are paid, and in North Carolina, funds for other pregnancy-related expenses may be available, too. We cannot place your child for adoption, but we can provide referrals to reputable, licensed adoption agencies to give you more information.
