What Are the Side Effects of the Abortion Pill?

Any abortion, including taking abortion drugs, is a serious medical decision. Like other medical procedures, the abortion pill has side effects. Because you complete the abortion pill method on your own, knowing what to expect is critical. Make sure you are aware of how much bleeding is too much or the signs of an infection.

What is the Abortion Pill Method?

The abortion pill has a number of different names, like medical, medication or chemical abortion. Although it’s called the abortion pill, you actually take two different drugs.

Mifepristone, the first drug, blocks the hormone progesterone. Every pregnancy requires progesterone to continue growing. Without this essential hormone, the pregnancy is terminated.

The second drug, misoprostol, causes contractions to remove the pregnancy from your body through the vagina.

The Side Effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, these are the possible side effects of medical abortion:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

When Should You Be Concerned?

Every abortion involves a certain amount of bleeding and cramping. But you need to know how much bleeding should make you concerned.

Experts say the following symptoms may require medical attention after a medical abortion (the abortion pill):

  • Heavy bleeding — soaking two or more pads an hour for two hours
  • Severe abdominal or back pain
  • Fever lasting more than 24 hours
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
