Finding out you’re pregnant while still in high school can bring a lot of questions at once. You may be thinking about graduation, sports, college plans, your friends, and now you’re trying to figure out what this means for you.

Before anything else, take a breath. You are not alone. Schedule a free and confidential appointment at The Center for Women. You’ll be met with acceptance, safety, and support as you figure out what comes next.

First Things First: Get Clear Answers

If you’ve taken a home pregnancy test, your next step is confirmation with a lab-quality test and a limited ultrasound. A pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG, which signals a potential pregnancy, but an ultrasound provides the details you need to move forward wisely.

At The Center for Women, we provide free pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds following a positive test. During your ultrasound, we confirm the pregnancy and check for viability, placement, and gestational age.

These details are important. An ultrasound can identify signs of miscarriage and rule out an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus and can be life-threatening if not treated. Knowing how far along you are also helps you understand your options and plan your next steps.

If You’re Thinking About Parenting

Choosing to parent while still in school may feel intimidating, but many students continue their education successfully with the right support.

Parenting doesn’t mean your goals disappear. You can still graduate. You can still pursue college or career plans. Talk with a school counselor, adjust your class schedule if needed, and identify reliable childcare support early.

At The Center for Women, we provide resources to help you prepare. We offer material resources, educational opportunities, and community referrals that can help with essentials for you and your baby. Our Hero Dads program exists to equip fathers with the support and direction they need to actively and confidently care for their child.

Parenting is life-changing, but you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Your Rights at School: Understanding Title IX

You have legal protections at school under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), a federal law that protects pregnant and parenting students.

This means:

  • Your school cannot force you to drop out, transfer schools, or leave extracurricular activities because you are pregnant.
  • You are entitled to reasonable accommodations, such as excused absences for medical appointments and time to recover after childbirth.
  • You must be allowed to make up missed assignments or tests.
  • You can remain in your regular classes unless you request an alternative option.

If you’re unsure how to ask for accommodations, your school’s Title IX coordinator, counselor, or nurse can explain your rights and help you through the process.

You deserve to continue your education without discrimination.
