Someone considering an abortion

Knowing some key facts about abortion beforehand is vital. For instance, did you know the type of procedure you qualify for is generally determined by how far along you are in your pregnancy?

The FDA approves the use of medical abortion (the abortion pill method) through 10 weeks of pregnancy only, but specific issues could prevent it from being an option. Although we do not perform or refer for abortion, we do want to protect your health and safety.

You May Not Qualify for the Abortion Pill Method

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a medical abortion isn’t a safe option for you if you have the following issues:

  • You are too far along in your pregnancy
  • You are allergic to the drugs used (mifepristone and misoprostol)
  • Have a pregnancy outside of your uterus (ectopic pregnancy)
  • Use long-term corticosteroids (drugs that reduce inflammation in your body, such as drugs for asthma, eczema, or an autoimmune disease)
  • You have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place
  • You have a blood clotting disorder, significant anemia, or chronic adrenal failure
  • You don’t have access to emergency care

How Do I Get the Information I Need?

Before any major medical procedure, including abortion, meeting with your healthcare provider is critical. They will want to review your current medications and physical and mental health and discuss your options.

To find out how far along you are in your pregnancy and its location, come to The Center for Women. We provide free pregnancy testing. Confirming the results is essential even if you’ve taken a home pregnancy test.

If you receive a positive pregnancy test result from one of our tests, we’ll schedule you for a medical appointment, which includes a free ultrasound. An ultrasound exam detects how far along you are and the location of your pregnancy.

In addition, ultrasound reveals if your pregnancy is growing or if you’ve possibly had a miscarriage. An early miscarriage is more common than many women realize.
